My Sister’s Keeper makes for a refreshing drama. Cameron Diaz takes on an unusual role (at least for her). She plays the part of a responsible, sacrificing mother, who will do anything to keep her daughter, who has cancer, from dying. This includes conceiving another child as a “donor”, meant to give her sick daughter any organs she might need. The “donor” child is played by Abigail Breslin, who delivers a great performance.
This movie initially has all the markings of a very traditional heart-warming-type family drama that seems to be quite predictable. But luckily the viewer is treated to a twist in the story that spices things up a bit, just before everything is wrapped up nicely.
On the down side, the movie didn’t evoke that much emotion in me as other dramas have, but for it redeemed itself by offering other interesting elements. Firstly, it told the story from several different perspectives. Each person in the family had their part to tell of the story, giving us unique insights into that character. And secondly, one element of the movie reminded me of something often seen in House M.D. – that grey-area situation where someone has to make a decision that doesn’t have an obvious choice. Both ways have their advantages and disadvantages, and so the viewer is torn between two options that both have their merits and demerits. It makes you think.
In conclusion the movie was quite chilled, but didn’t lose my attention. I enjoyed it and would recommend it to anyone who doesn’t mind a slower-paced drama now and again.
