Best movies of 2009

The year 2009 brought us some good movie entertainment. Here are MY favourites:

Best all-around movie: Star Trek

Star Trek has everything you need to be entertained. Action, comedy, and a smidge (but not too much) of romance. Honourable mention: Avatar

Best action movie: Fast and Furious

Fast and Furious was way over the top and totally unrealistic, but the action was fast and furious. Honourable mention: Terminator Salvation

Best science fiction movie: Moon

Moon was brilliantly written and filmed to portray what prolonged solitary confinement can do to someone. Sam Rockwell delivers an excellent performance. Honourable mention: Franklyn

Best romantic comedy: 500 Days of Summer

Yes, I know, 500 Days of Summer is not a love story, according to the narrator, but I think it is. The narration is very fresh and you get lots of laughs. Honourable mention: He’s Just Not That Into You

Best animated movie: Monsters vs Aliens

Monsters vs. Aliens had some of the most witty humour I’ve heard in a long while. I watched this one twice at the cinema, just for the laughs. Honourable mention: Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs

Best drama: Julie and Julia

Julie and Julia challenges us to have dreams and actually do something to achieve them. Quite inspirational. Honourable mention: Seven Pounds

Best war movie: The Hurt Locker

Giving you an insightful look into the Iraq war, The Hurt Locker is unique and makes you think. Honourable mention: Valkyrie

Starting autumn with (500) Days of Summer

500 Days of SummerEverybody loves Summer. And it’s no different for Tom Hansen. When Summer is employed in the office where Tom works, he finds love at first sight. But Summer is no ordinary girl. There’s something about her, and Tom can’t put his finger on it. It’s no surprise, then, that she’s all he can think about. I should state, though, that this is not a love story. This is made clear right at the beginning of the movie.

500 Days of Summer, starring Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Zooey Deschanel, takes a very fresh approach to romantic comedy. In a way it’s not really a romantic comedy, though. The movie takes us on a journey through Tom’s experiences that involve Summer in one way or another. Over the 500 days that he’s known her, we see some of the highs and lows Tom goes through. Summer seems to be very unsure about what she wants, and subsequently puts Tom through some tough times. But will they end up together? You’ll have to watch the movie yourself. It’s well worth it!

On a deeper note, the movie has something to say about following your dreams. Tom designs cards for a greeting card company, but is really an architect at heart. He’s not doing much to follow that dream, though. And so theĀ  500 day journey of joy, sadness, and depression, teaches Tom something new about reaching for a star. It’s quite inspiring.

I thoroughly enjoyed 500 Days of Summer and would recommend that you watch it when you get a chance.
